TEAM SPOTLIGHT: CHEO

The CHEO SLIP team is led by Dr. Kevin Smit, a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon at CHEO and an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Smit specializes in hip and spinal deformities in the pediatric population and for several years has been contributing to international research teams in both of these areas.

At CHEO, we have a tremendous group of Orthopaedic surgeons that are involved in the care and management of SCFE patients: Drs. Sasha Carsen, James Jarvis, Alicia Kerrigan, Akshay Seth, Baxter Willis, Andrew Tice and our nurse practitioner Jessica Romeo. Our research team of Holly Livock (research manager), Patrick Sachsalber (research coordinator) and our rotating co-op research students all have played an important part in collecting the study data over the past 5-6 years that we have been involved with the SLIP registry.

We treat a diverse population ranging from rural communities of all backgrounds in Ottawa to more isolated communities found in Northern Ontario, Western Quebec and Nunavut. We hope that performing this important research that we will be able to provide the best possible care to all individuals even when access to medical care is more difficult to attain. Dr. Smit and Dr. Carsen specialize in pediatric hip preservation surgery and have used these techniques to treat SCFE with the modified Dunn osteotomy, proximal femoral osteotomies, and arthroscopic femoral osteochondroplasty for post-SCFE deformity. Stay tuned for a publication from our team on bilateral same day Dunn osteotomies for severe SCF
