Types of SCFE

There are two types of SCFE: stable and unstable.

Stable SCFE

Stable SCFE occurs when the child can still bear weight on the affected leg. They may, however, require crutches and/or experience moderate pain. Most SCFE diagnoses are stable.

Unstable SCFE

Unstable SCFE occurs when the child experiences severe pain and is unable to bear any weight on the affected leg. Complications are much more likely to arise from unstable SCFE. This type of SCFE requires immediate treatment in the hospital emergency room.
